Project context and summary:

Tuberculosis remains a major challenge to global health and the need for new drugs with new mechanisms of action is imperative, not only to counter the phenomenon of resistance, but also to enhance and accelerate the treatment of drug-sensitive strains. To this aim a large FP7 Consortium, known as More Medicines For Tuberculosis (MM4TB), was formerly created to search for new drugs candidates suitable for clinical development. In this context, two compounds with a MIC in the order of 1-2 µM were identified that could target an FE-S protein of unknown function. Here we aim to expose Mycobacterium tuberculosis to different concentrations of the two compounds for a short period of time, and to track the changes in the transcriptional profile of the pathogen, in order to gain additional insights into the possible cellular target of these candidate anti-tubercular compounds.
