Project context and summary:

The rapid emergence and spread of pathogenic bacteria, which are (multi)-resistant to antibiotics is a priority global health concern. This health threat also affects the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). The objectives of the project are to (i) update and standardise knowledge of these antibiotic resistant bacterial strains in the Pacific region, (ii) investigate the potential spread of resistant bacteria or antibiotic resistance genes between three neighbouring Pacific territories, and (iii) improve microbiological diagnostic capabilities in all collaborating laboratories The study will investigate several bacteria, including beta-lactam-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and Haemophilus influenzae, meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Neisseria gonorrhoeae resistant to cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones. From a public health perspective, this integrated approach to antimicrobial resistance will make it possible to identify critical points that could be the focus of control measures to limit the spread of antimicrobial resistance.
