In our lab, we identified and characterized a L. pneumophila protein that is predicted to encode a eukaryotic-like lysine methyltransferase. By using a MS/MS approach, we revealed that it is not a histone methyltransferase, as its human homologues, but it mainly targets eukaryotic RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) that play multiple regulatory roles in the nucleus, such as nuclear body formation, transcriptional regulation, genome stability and alternative splicing.
