Project context and summary:

We are studying the diversity of viruses infecting hyperthermophilic archaea. We have collected environmental samples from the hot springs in Japan, Costa Rica and Chile. The samples were used to start the enrichment cultures. After 10 days of incubation the samples were checked under TEM. Viruses with different virion morphologies were observed, including lemon-shaped, rod-shaped, filamentous, spiral-like and spherical.
Our objectibve is to sequence the total viral DNA extracted from the supernatants of the enrichment cultures and also from the pure, isolated viruses. The genomes of the archaeal viruses are usually dsDNA and of 15-70kb in size.
