Project context and summary:

In ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), a low relative abundance of Streptococcus spp. within the lung microbiome at the time of intubation has been associated with higher mortality at day 28, and an enrichment with Enterobacteriaceae has been highlighted as an aggravating factor (1,2). It has been recently shown that the use of probiotics would reduce the incidence of VAP, duration of mechanical ventilation, and length of ICU stay (3). Furthermore, a recent study demonstrated that microaspirations of oral microbes would mitigate host susceptibility to infection with lower airway pathogens (4). In that context, we study the in vitro interactions between oral commensal streptococcal species (S. mitis, S. salivarius) and common respiratory pathogens (E. coli and P. aeruginosa) in order to explore antagonistic effects between them.
