Project context and summary:

How did the cellular mechanisms underlying animal morphogenesis arise in our distant unicellular ancestors remains an open evolutionary question. Recent efforts to reconstruct the mechanisms by which the first multicellular animals evolved have benefited greatly from comparisons of extant animals and their closest living unicellular relatives, including choanoflagellates.
In ongoing research, we aim to provide high-quality genome and transcriptome resources for comparative genomics and phylogenomics of newly isolated choanoflagellate species to address fundamental questions about the conservation of molecular pathways involved in morphogenesis and multicellularity between choanoflagellates and animals.
